 From
Vathy a road winds its way seven kilometres south to the site of Arethusa’s
Fountain, where Homer’s Eumaeus brought his pigs to drink. The surrounding
countryside holds a beautiful, undulating landscape with only a very few
houses and dramatic views to the sea. Two kilometres from Vathy, just off
this road, lies Villa Apaggio.
Set in private gardens of olive, peach, lemon
and fig trees with pool and barbecue terraces bordered by roses and grape vines,
Villa Apaggio is a peaceful retreat with gentle views over olive-clad
hillsides to the sea. The villa provides modern comforts with a special
emphasis on areas surrounding the pool, shaded by pergolas, for dining and
relaxing in total privacy.
Car hire is strongly suggested: Vathy and its
good selection of tavernas, bars and shops is a drive of ten minutes.
The sand and pebble beach of Kaminia is a ten minute drive along a little-used
unmade track. Goat tracks lead past olive groves and vineyards to the small
medieval town of Paleochora, once the island’s capital but now abandoned to the
vestiges of fortified houses and churches with fading Byzantine frescoes.

Villa
Pachino sits next door to Villa Nitsa, above the coastal road to Frikes and
overlooking the bay with magnificent views to Lefkas and her nearby islands.
Just ten minutes walk from Frikes village and one minute from the nearest
beach.
One

Phoebe
is a large, traditional island house
which has been converted with care to produce a beautiful private home. From its
hillside position, about ten minutes’ walk away from Kioni waterfront,
the house’s large flagstoned verandah and balcony provide spectacular views
across silver olive trees and Kioni Bay.

Reached
by a small country track, which cuts through the valley of olive groves behind
the little port of Frikes, Petrino House provides total privacy but is just a
short distance from the waterfront shops and tavernas.

of the villa:
The
ten to fifteen minute walk from Kioni waterfront to the Hilltop House is steep
in parts but will reward the escapist. This is the only private house in
Kioni to have a swimming pool. Views from the large, private verandah over
Kioni Bay, toward the islands of Atokos, Arkoudi, Meganisi and Lefkas and the
Greek mainland, are outstanding.
Hilltop
House has spacious rooms with exposed cedar beams and has a
comfortable feeling of a traditional island home.
The
Lefki Villas are the only villas on Ithaca with private pools, a short
distance to a beautiful beach and with stunning views across the sea. A
small road leads down from the small village of Lefki, perched up high on
Ithaca’s west coast, to the clear waters of Agios Yannis beach. Half way down to
the beach, each of the Lefki Villas is set on a separate hillside terrace
surrounded by olive groves. The views from each villa are over the silver
olives and across the channel between Ithaca and Cephalonia, whose forested
hillsides form a theatrical backdrop for the setting sun.
The twinkling lights of Cephalonia’s north coast villages enhance the theatrical
effect.

Villa
Martina is not overlooked by any other house and has stunning and
uninterrupted views over Afales Bay and across the sea to the island of
Lefkas. Set on a hillside of olive and pine trees, the villa is just half a
kilometre away (a five minute walk) from Afales beach.
The dramatic views also take in the coastal hillsides of olive and pine trees
and in the distance, an ancient stone windmill.
which has a good taverna, is one kilometre away and the larger village of
Stavros, with a selection of tavernas, shops and cafés, is just under three
kilometres away.
The
village of Exoghi hides away at the very top of a hill overlooking Afales Bay on
Ithaca’s north coast. Up to the middle of the 20th Century the village’s
population was 1.500 and the surrounding hillside terraces were covered with
vineyards. Today a population of around fifty look after just twelve vineyards
and the hillsides are forested with tall cypress trees. Exoghi, meaning "out
of the sky", offers a peaceful retreat.
